Welcome to Southern Alberta
|
|
| Capital: Edmonton Motto: Flower: Wild Rose Population, over 3 million The Land Flanked by the Eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains on the southwest, Alberta offers the variety of rolling Prairie in the southeast, rich and productive parkland of the central region, and the forests of the northern areas. Most of the land is relatively flat and level, occasionally cut by the numerous river valleys which drain from the western mountains to the east, north or south. The southeast corner is typically dry, and affords cattle ranching, dryland farming, and a productive oil & gas industry. The central parkland supports productive farms with various grains, oilseeds, and livestock. The timbered northland supports a varied forestry industry, plus more oil & gas production and a significant mining industry. A large part of southern Alberta uses water from several rivers originating in the mountains to maintain a major irrigation system that produces grain, forage, vegetables, oilseeds, and other crops. About 1.3 million acres are irrigated by an efficient and well developed group of irrigation districts. It forms the basis of the largest cattle feeding center in Canada. The People Alberta is to a large extent populated by immigrants from around the world - Europe, Asia (including many from Japan & China), United States, and elsewhere). Our citizens are generally well educated and trained, resourcefull and ambitious, as well as friendly and supportive. The year 2005 marks our 100 year Centennial as a province of Canada. Economy | |
